It’s no Legacy GT of the past. No manual.
Key details : “Standard on XT models, the 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine delivers brisk acceleration and robust all-around performance, with 260 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 277 lb-ft of torque from 2,000-4,800 rpm. Mated to a high-torque Lineartronic CVT with manual mode and steering wheel paddle control switches, the 2.4-liter BOXER launches Legacy XT from 0-60 mph in an estimated 6.1 seconds. Fuel economy for the turbo is equally impressive, with a manufacturer’s estimation of 24/32 mpg city/highway. For 2020, the Legacy’s CVT hydraulic system features a lower viscosity oil that reduces horsepower loss by 32 percent compared to the previous model’s CVT, helping the new model achieve both higher fuel economy and greater driving performance.”
They went full Volvo with the infotainment. Those HVAC controls at the bottom, they are touchscreen controls. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
XT touring model interior
I’d say it’s a competent package overall looking at the specs, but it’s a tough segment out there with even the Accord and Camry struggling.

Overall, feeling pretty meh about it.
This jumped out at me though, 32 percent?!

32% of the previous loss% I assume, but still a third of whatever that original number is being improved. A second faster I think than the current 3.6R. Still a CVT though, but then again this is a safe sensible comfortable family car.

$37K for the top of the line Touring XT guaranteed . But the base turbo model should be $ 2K cheaper, methinks.

Look at the pricing of the last gen Forester XT and tack $2500 or so to every trim level.
Real world pricing will be approximately $2500 -4000 under msrp based on Heuberger Subaru pricing .

Perhaps this will make you happy. 6 speed manual standard: https://www.carscoops.com/2019/02/2019-vw-jetta-gli-american-gti-sedan/
There’s always the Accord Sport 2.0T with a manual for around $25K but donno how long they’ll keep it around if no one buys them
If you want only AWD+Turbo+Manual combo, t here’s always the WRX, perhaps they’ll put the 2.4 Turbo in the future.

This looks nice. I am thinking of it as the DD for a 45 year engineer who goes to a track day once a year. ...n
ot a car for me.
I do not like the HVAC controls. I want the fan speed to be plastic buttons, but maybe there is fan speed on the steering wheel, and this is definitely
cheaper to make.

Even with the CVT, I don’t hate it. The CVT in my wife’s former Impreza didn’t bother me and I actually liked it for highway on-ramps and such.

Subaru offered the current generation Legacy and Outback with the 6 speed manual in Canada until the 2018 model year.
While it was unlikely that we would get a manual in the US it wouldn’t have been unreasonable for them to have offered it in other markets.

I tolerate CVTs at best, if it is rental car or something. But I read they’re getting better every year, at least they don’t hunt around for gears like some new 10 speeds . Maybe 5 years later I’d consider one.

Heuberger is awesome! I have looked at their numbers, and even with paying for shipping it still comes closer to my local dealer who acts like Subarus are made of pure gold or something.

Are they seriously bragging about a 0-60 time of 6.1 seconds in a top spec Legacy here? Pretty sure my 05 GT manual was in the 5s (of course you’d grenade that transmission if you actually tried to make that happen ). I guess they’ve completely decided to not market this as a performance variant at all in transitioning the name to XT, which makes sense given that they’re not even trying with that CVT (which yes is fine for a regular car, but not for a performance vehicle).
The package as a whole seems to be a good improvement on the current Legacy but they still have a lot of catching up to do to get this name back to its former glory, and I don’t think they are really even trying to do so at this point. Interior does seem to be a pretty big step up, I’m sure the Outback variant will sell like hotcakes (but it will do so even if it was a turd).

Yea, I know...I just like that the Legacy GT is a bit more grown up looking and a bit bigger. The Accord 2.0T is an interesting car that I’ll probably test drive, but my heart’s really set on RWD or AWD with a manual. Plus I plan on test driving the Stinger when I get to seriously shopping even though it doesn’t have a real manual. When I do get to it I want to buy something <10 years old and prefer ably <5 . So far my list is Chevy SS, Cadillac CTS, KIA Stinger, Accord 2.0T, and possibly look at the last generation Legacy GT but I really don’t like their looks.

I’m trying to think of a time when Subarus were considered reliable. I guess my ‘91 Loyale was pretty reliable. Although it would fry the ECU fuse if you floored it. My ‘08 WRX ate a piston and it’s synchros within 70k miles, and it’s firewall cracked for no good reason. My ‘ 13 XT thankfully held onto its HG, but it did blow off it’s intercooler piping within the first 10k miles, it’s dash rattled from the factory and it’s roof rails warped within 20k miles.
Subarus are made with love, not competence. I still miss all my Subies, though, but I’d never buy one with a CVT.

Subaru, who definitely isn’t known for building glass transmission, used lighter transmission oil in order to get better fuel economy? That should end well.

My 89 XT went to 160k then I overheated it. It was in fantastic shape even after 10 years. My 2002 Impreza was kind of a piece of shit. My mom’s 2001 Impreza 2.5 RS was very good, had 135k when she totaled it. My Current 2013 outback is on it’s second engine due to oil consumption
. Ironically that is the ONLY problem we have had with the car otherwise it’s been way better
than the 2002 impreza.

Try S hortline Subaru as well. If you email heuberger for their best price (and they are set on those), provide Shortline with that quote and they’ll beta the deal. Schomp just bought them and they expanded to the old FIAT lot across the street and they are trying to become Heuberger of Denver, because it is a hassle to drive 90 minutes to Heuberger.

You’re XT overheated at 160k miles because it’s HG started leaking at 100k miles. You can get a lot of life out of bad HGs when you’re only making 80 hp ; )
Also, you didn’t mention any oil leaks. How’d you manage to run it for so long without oil? /s
The interior on my Loyale was much nicer than the WRX or Forester.
